I loved making this video. Took a very long while, but it’s my favorite yet! Lots of cute little kids and cartoon backgrounds. It’s fun and innocent and hopeful, something we could all use about now. I hope you enjoy it too.
Little by little, Brian and I are combing through archives of my songs, panning for gold from the bygone musical streams of my life. “Trying to Stop Loving You” is one shining nugget we found on a cassette tape in one of the dusty boxes in my basement. I recorded this demo for co-producers Scott and Rosebud Ireland (known then and still as Bug Guts) when we were considering which songs to put on my 1995 CD, The Cauldron. I was writing many songs at that time in my life, sometimes three a week. There were lots of worthy songs that for one reason or another didn’t make it onto any recordings I released.
This love song slipped through the cracks, and I’d totally forgotten about it! Brian and I enjoyed it, it and ran it by Jordan, who remembered the song when I wrote it in 1994. Jordan now consults with us on audio production of every new release. We all agreed “Trying to Stop Loving You” deserves to be put out there. If we all love the song, it’s worth doing it justice. Then we keep playing with it, until it hits the sweet spot for all of us.
Once again, I am delighted and honored to have the fabulous Pendras Power Team contribute their wonderful musical DNA: Peter Pendras on guitar, and Trevor Pendras singing harmony. Also, Carl Dexter, who has also recorded with me many times over the last 30-plus years, added beautiful bass and piano parts as well as helping out with engineering. Brian continues to up his game with his engineering and mastering skills on his own recent work with Jarboe as well as mine, dialing the sounds into the happy place in our brains.
Please listen and watch the video all the way through! The credits are really fun, featuring a 1918 blues song and cute kids representing the different contributors.
As well as this release on Youtube, the audio for “Trying to Stop Loving You” will be available in the next few weeks on all the streaming services, including Tidal and Bandcamp for the highest quality.
As always, would love to hear your feelings about the music!
PS: I’m writing new songs too (including piano, my beautiful new passion!) and as soon as I can get to recording and producing them, I will share!
Hi Elizabeth. Yes, this was definitely a sweet and innocent and uplifting sort of song. I am guessing that you didn't write it with children in mind, but it seems perfect as a song to sing to a special child in one's life. I marveled at how you fit the children's movement to the beat of the music so well and can see why that took a long time to do. Brava!
Just wonderful! Thank you!
